Carrot Hot Dogs

Best Carrot Hot DogsThese Vegan Carrot Hot Dogs are made using 10 seasoning ingredients that marinate your carrot hot dog! I originally made veggie hot dogs from carrots back in 2015 and this is an updated version.

Vegan Carrot Hot DogsYears ago I found a photo on Reddit of a plain carrot in a hotdog bun and I’ve been carrying that inspiration with me ever since. After testing a few different versions, I finally made the best carrot hotdogs I can make at home.

These carrot hotdogs may seem like the punchline of a vegan joke, but they truly take on a perfect wiener texture and are seasoned perfectly. Carrots are in season and can be picked up locally to turn into these delicious hot dogs. Stick this wiener between buns and enjoy your vegan hot dog all summer long. Suns out buns out!

Instructions
  1. Whittle down your carrots to have the same texture and smoothness as hot dogs do.
  2. Fill a pot the width of your carrots halfway with water and bring to a boil.
  3. In a long sealable container or large ziplock bag, whisk together rice vinegar, apple cider vinegar, water, sesame oil, tamari, garlic powder, onion powder, ginger powder, cayenne and black pepper. Set aside.
  4. Add carrots and boil for 6 to 9 mins depending on how thick your carrots are, or until fork-tender. DO NOT OVERCOOK THEM. They should not be mushy and should hold their shape.
  5. Fill a large mixing bowl with ice-cold water (i also added ice cubes to water).
  6. Remove carrots from boiling water and transfer to ice-cold water immediately. This will stop them from continuing to cook. Allow to cool in the water for 2 mins.
  7. Add carrots to the marinade mixture and gently shake to coat. Place bag or container in the fridge. Depending on when you want to cook them to eat, I recommend leaving them to marinate for as long as possible. Minimum 1 hour but overnight is best. The longer you marinate, the better they will be.
  8. When ready to prepare carrot hot dogs, you can cook these on a BBQ (yay summer) or on the stove in a greased pan.
  9. If using a barbecue; toss on carrots and cook until heated and slightly charred, rotating to ensure even cooking; about 5-10 mins. Spoon some leftover marinade over the carrots while cooking to create a yummy crusty exterior.
  10. If using a grill pan, grease with olive oil and heat over medium heat. Add carrots and heat, about 5-10 mins, rotating to ensure even cooking. Spoon some leftover marinade over the carrots while cooking to create a yummy crusty exterior.
  11. Remove from heat and serve on a hot dog bun with condiments of choice.

  • Candice “The Edgy Veg” always delivers nutritious, delicious, yet simple recipes. The carrot dogs are NO exception. I recently made this recipe for the first time and Candice’s YouTube video and recipe instructions really helped me execute this meal on the first go round! I’m fairly new to veganism. However, recreating Candice’s recipes always make me feel like a pro! She is always so entertaining. Keep up the great work!

  • Delicious and nutritious. I love this dish. I usually do it on weekends. The recipe is simple and easy to follow. I added a lot of carrots to the recipe but it’s still delicious. Thanks for the very helpful article.

  • Ive been making these since around 2015 and I love this silly vegan treat! This marinade looks amazing I can’t wait to try! And I love the topping options

  • These are so fun as a hotdog alternative for my kids! They loved these with just ketchup

  • I didn’t have sesame oil and used odourless coconut oil instead with the liquid smoke suggestion and was delicious. I definitely think the longer they marinate the better! I grilled 2 last night after an hour of marinating and left the other two over night. Looking forward to having them for lunch.

  • Rebecca says:

Whipped up the marinade this morning and added my boiled carrots and left for about 6 hours before dinner and they were delicious! My carrot dogs don’t look as pretty as Candice’s in the video and wish she showed in the video how should peeled/cut them to look SO pretty. They were delicious no matter what! Served a high-protein bean salad and corn on the cob it was an awesome summer dinner.
