The best way to spend a snowy day is cuddling on the couch with the family, a furry friend, or just a significant other, with a classic holiday movie playing and a warm cup of hot chocolate in your hands. My favourite way to make vegan hot chocolate is by warming soy milk in a saucepan and microwaving dairy-free chocolate chips in the microwave. Then I pour them into a blender with a splash of vanilla and mix before pouring it into a mug. Mixing in a blender makes a tasty, smooth drink with a light, foamy milk texture.
I like it served in a kitschy mug with vegan marshmallows or dairy-free whip on top. Best served with vegan cookies, obviously. Sipping on soy milk hot chocolates will warm your heart and your tummy.

TIPS FOR MAKING HOT CHOCOLATE
- To make a minty hot chocolate, add peppermint candy
- To make a Mexican hot chocolate, ass a dash of chili powder
- If you love cinnamon, I recommend adding a dash of cinnamon
- Don’t microwave or boil soy milk. Use medium heat in pan to warm soy milk to avoid a weird film.
CAN YOU HEAT UP SOYA MILK FOR HOT CHOCOLATE?
Yes, you can heat up soya milk for hot chocolate! In a small saucepan, heat soya milk over medium heat, whisking constantly to prevent burning. If you boil soy milk on high, it will get a skin, so don’t boil soya milk too high. I wouldn’t recommend heating up in a microwave for this reason as well.
CAN VEGANS HAVE HOT CHOCOLATE?
Vegans can have hot chocolate but be careful of what’s inside your hot chocolate! There are many hot chocolate options that are accidentally vegan so check the ingredients label. However, the best hot chocolate for vegans is the fresh ones you make at home in 5 mins.
WHAT’S THE BEST MILK ALTERNATIVE FOR HOT CHOCOLATE?
The best milk alternative for hot chocolate is soy milk because it has a higher protein content which makes it more stable for heating up, compared to almond milk that has almost no protein. You can add whatever milk alternative for your hot chocolate, but best on testing recipes, soy milk is the best for hot chocolate.
