KFC Vegan Chicken

KFC Vegan Chicken RecipeKFC vegan chicken options are slowly being implemented in their menu. Although most KFC’s have some vegan options (I’ve tried everything vegan from KFC on my YouTube Channel), not many locations have a meatless chicken option. However, KFC has been testing a vegan chicken in a few locations (that sold out fast) and may begin rolling it out to more locations soon.

Since vegan chicken isn’t available at KFC everywhere, I want to show you how to make your own KFC vegan chicken using 16 Ingredients in my recipe below! Plus, this recipe is for people who don’t want to eat at KFC or don’t live near a KFC and rather make it at home!

KFC Vegan Chicken

The base of this recipe is from my popular Vegan Chicken Drumsticks recipe, but breaded and seasoned to taste like the world-famous chicken served at KFC. The spice blend used by KFC is unique and often irresistible to so many people. Let’s enjoy that same taste, but plant-based!

    1. If using a deep fryer: heat frying oil to 325F.

    1. In a deep fryer: this should cook up golden brown and crispy in about 3-4 minutes.

  11. Keep an eye on the pieces and remove when golden brown and crispy.
  12. Place finished vegan chicken on a wire lined rack.

    Hi Candice,

I’m fix’n to try this.. I’m tryin’ t’stick to a SOS (Salt, Oil, Sugar) free form of eating (Yeah, I know, it’s like drivin’ down 10 miles o’bad road, but someone’s gotta do it!)

So instead of deep fat fryin’ this stuff, have y’tried doin’ it in an air fryer n’ how’d it come out? If not, y’have any recommendations / thoughts / words of admonishment fer me?

Hey, I’m justa simple guy… tryin’ t’do simple stuff… but I really enjoy all you’re doin.. n’ thanks a ton!

    I can hardly wait t’try this !

Oh… n’ BTW.. the “rate this recipe” thingy at the bottm o’this page… well… it only allows 2 stars??? WTH??? I’d give it 13 stars if I could!

    All the best

  • The video looked AMAZING and I’ve recently been obsessed with vegan fried burgers, but I was wondering if this would be possible to make in an air fryer for some less oil? Or does it really have to be oil fried? I don’t mind oil frying, but was just wondering if its possible to do without it! I’m just unsure as this has no breadcrumbs on it and usually those airfry better in my experience, but I wanted to ask to make sure as you guys are the experts haha!

    • I haven’t tried it air-fried but if you do, please let us know in a comment how it came out!

  • Toni Mason says:

OMG…. it thought you were all exagegrating about how nice this is….we both loved it and used vegan fillets instead of jackfruit. it tasted like KFC (can’t stand the place and waht it stands for) the coating was just lovely. It’s my partners new favourite dinner…LOVE LOVE LOVE

  • Loved this recipe, it was easier than I thought and tastier than I thought.

  • I made your chicken recipe with no jackfruit and then used the KFC spices . WOW! Came out great. Was really impressed with the tenderness and texture of this “meat.” Tasted pretty damned close to chicken. What I didn’t do was cook it in the oven. I put it in the Instant Pot on High pressure for 45 minutes. Came out firm. Was perfect. In my opinion (obviously since I’m writing this), the best way to cook seitan is in the pressure cooker. Works every time. Saves energy and in the summer, who wants their oven on for any period of time? You’re a star. Keep the SEITAN recipes coming. Also, the flavor was great with the KFC spices but I omitted the salt. Would have been too salty with that additional salt. How can I make the crispy covering thicker? LOVE YOU!

  • I am really thick, so please forgive me!

hey there, a little confused on the instructions vs video
“Prepare vegan chicken according to my recipe instructions up until the cooking method.”
    I’m confused:
Question: To use the Best Vegan Chicken Drumstick recipe in this recipe what is “the cooking method” refer to
    1. Stopping after Step 2 (in recipe) Add jackfruit and bring to boil…or
    2. Stopping before Step 5 In a small blender or bowl whisk, whip together mung bean starch and silken tofu
So, does this KFC recipe chicken have mung bean starch and silken tofu or just seasoned jackfruit?
Again, I apologize, you must go crazy that someone can’t get what is obvious!

    • Yes, the KFC chicken includes the whole chicken drumstick instructions. You don’t necessarily need it but it definitely helps wth texture

  • Christopher says:

Made this recipe, so god Damn good!

  • Nicholas Burgess says:

How do you make this recipe whole food plant based?

    • EdgyVeg says:

This recipe wasn’t intended to be whole foods plant-based, there are lots of recipes on this website and across the web that are great for whole foods recipes. This one is definitely more of a replacement for traditional fast food that can be enjoyed at home

  • Gabriela says:

    Hi!
Thank you for the recipe, looks amazing?
How would this do in an air fryer?
    I need a healthier version 🙂

  • Mona Eversole says:

I cant wait to try this. I think in the instructions and ingredients you left out the rice paper, opps, or did not mean to do that lol

  • This is SUCH a great recipe! So flavourful

  • Pablo Sedano says:

I’m from Mexico and some of the ingredients are difficult to find, but I did it and I’m very happy for how it turned out. I made a reunion and everyone loved it, some non-vegan friends tried it and they liked it even more than real chicken. I recommend this recipe a 100%.

  • hey there, a little confused on the instructions vs video

“Prepare vegan chicken according to my recipe instructions up until the cooking method.”
then in the video you still have whole jackfruit – so i wanted to confirm:

Do you do the jackfruit in the broth, as whole pieces, and then when its ready to go into the rice paper then de-heart/seed ?

  • I didn’t think she could do better than the chicken drumstick recipe but this looks unreal!!!! how does Edgy Veg thnk of this stuff? When are you opening a restaurant

  • Bobby McGovern says:

The flavors were FANTASTIC. I can’t tell you how much I loved it. However, I wasn’t crazy about the texture of the jackfruit. It was almost like that of cooked cabbage. I wonder if shredded seitan would work?

  • Made today and turned out great! Can you keep breaded, uncooked pieces in the freezer and fry at a later date?

  • Adamina Carden says:

Planning to try this with my homemade smoky bacon vegan mayo – super easy if anybody wants to try. I just eyeball it, but approximate measurements:
    – 1 tbsp aquafaba
    – 1 tbsp lemon juice or apple cider vinegar
    – 1 tbsp dijon mustard
    – pinch black salt
    – 1 cup oil of your choice (I prefer Grapeseed for neutral taste)
    – Simulated bacon bits
    – Couple drops of liquid smoke

With an immersion blender mix the aquafaba, lemon juice & mustard. Once combined SLOWLY pour the oil while continuing to blend (I like to do this in whatever container I’m going to store the mayo in so you don’t lose any in transfer). The mayo should thicken nicely. Add the black salt, bacon bits, and smoke and blend again. Add more lemon juice to taste if you like.
