Homemade Vegan Butter Recipe
Whether you need vegan butter for cooking, baking, or spreading on toast, this easy homemade vegan butter is spreadable, whipped and delicious. It makes a great butter replacement to store-bought vegan butter.
Plus it’s homemade!
INGREDIENTS FOR HOMEMADE VEGAN BUTTER
- 1/3 cup refined coconut oil, at room temperature
- 1 1/2 tbsp olive, avocado or canola oil (i prefer canola oil, but wanted to offer other options)
- 2 tsp nutritional yeast
- 3 tbsp aquafaba
- 1/4 tsp apple cider vinegar
- 1/2 tsp salt + extra to taste
- Pinch ground turmeric for colour (optional)
NOTE: Choosing a refined coconut oil prevents the coconut flavour and scent from coming through in your homemade vegan butter if you don’t want to taste or smell coconut.
INSTRUCTIONS FOR HOMEMADE VEGAN BUTTER
- Add aquafaba and vinegar to a mug or mason jar and begin blending with an immersion blender, or into a high-speed blender like a Vitamix. Blend until the aquafaba begins to froth and thicken.
- Slowly, while blending, drizzle in the oils, one at a time, and continue blending until it begins to thicken. It should look kind of like mayonnaise.
- Blend in nutritional yeast, turmeric, and salt until combined and smooth. Taste and season to taste.
- Transfer to an air-tight container and place it in the fridge overnight to firm.
- Use on toast, for cooking, or any other way you’d use butter!

Hiya, can this be frozen??
Yes, I wouldn’t freeze it longer than a month
I like the idea of this! Having recently tried Fora plant-based butter by way of Misfits Market, and finding that it’s magical ingredient is aquafaba has sent me on a search for home-made recipes…..which led me here. This sounds great and I expect to try it shortly 🙂
My big concern is the inclusion of canola oil, of which I recall reading many horror stories. Has the oil’s reputation been redeemed somehow? Do you have a safe/healthy brand to recommend, or an alternative like olive oil?
As an omnivore with a really nasty allergy to all things cow milk based, who is also attempting to tip the balance toward plant based in my diet (hence my Misfits Market experiment), I am always on the hunt for healthy home-made alternatives to the chemical laden, often less than eco-friendly alternatives found in the stores.
Hi Sylvia! plant-base butter is the best! I’m so happy you came across my vegan butter recipe using aquafaba. In terms of canola oil, you could totally use olive oil or even avocado oil instead! I personally found with testing all oils with this recipe that canola oil made it taste the closest to “butter” for those looking for a plant-based replica to butter. However, I understand many have concerns with canola oil (i personally don’t) and I’ve updated the recipe to include options for olive or avocado oil 🙂
Let me know how it turns out! I look forward to reading your comments 🙂
How long does this stay good for? I made it recently and it tastes amazing, just like the store bought but without the palm oil guilt! Thanks so much.
Hi Bella! Thanks for loving the recipe! Because my homemade butter doesn’t contain preservatives to make it last a long time, it’s fresh for 3 days or more. To make it last longer, I recommend freezing it. Once frozen, I just cut off 1/4 to de-thaw at a time from the frozen block to use for the week. That’s what I do!
I avoid palm oil like the plague and I’m not in love with some of the store-bought vegan butter ingredients. I’m really excited to try this!
So many vegan butters in Stores have palm oil and palm oil is truly destroying rainforests and habitats for animal. So glad I found this vegan butter recipe I can make at home and super cheap to make too! Thanks for making this recipe super accessible for anyone on a budget!
