full english breakfastWhen it comes to vegan breakfasts, I go all in. Breakfast. The Full English. The Full Monty. A fry-up. There are many breakfast names for this English breakfast. No matter what it’s called, Vegan will be added to each title with this recipe guide to making a full English breakfast.

“To eat well in England you should have breakfast three times a day.” –Somerset Maugham (1874-1965)

Traditionally, the full English breakfast is a substantial meal consisting of back bacon, eggs, British sausage, baked beans, fried tomato, fried mushrooms, black pudding, fried and toasted bread, served with coffee or tea and orange juice. We veganized all of these, but the black pudding. We tried and tried again, but no successful vegan black pudding has been created… yet.

vegan full english breakfastI’ve created easy-to-follow instructions below! You can also watch me on YouTube show you how to make it!

Hi, I’m Candice & welcome to The Edgy Veg! I veganize popular food recipes for vegans, plant-based diets, eco-conscious eaters & people who are trying to eat more plants over… y’know animals or by-products of animals. I hope you enjoy this tasty vegan recipe!

After doing some research about the traditional English breakfast, I learned that it first began with the Gentry, before being adopted by the Victorians who refined the tradition. Then came along the Edwardians who standardized the ingredients, giving us the English breakfast that we commonly find today. They created a truly national breakfast tradition and an icon of British culinary culture.

Today the English breakfast is more popular than ever and you can usually find an English breakfast in most towns and cities across the country, as well as overseas, wherever the British travel most, according to the English Breakfast Society. Yes there’s even a society for English Breakfast.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR FULL ENGLISH BREAKFAST

  1. Start your English Breakfast by brewing coffee or steeping tea the way you like it.
  2. In a small pot, warm the can of baked beans, and add the vinegar and mustard. Stir and let sit on low heat while preparing other ingredients, stirring occasionally.
  3. In a large pan, cook the vegan bacon and breakfast sausage. If you’re using rice paper bacon, make it according to the recipe on my website, and if you’re using store-bought vegan bacon, follow the package directions. Set aside.
  4. In the same pan you cooked the bacon and sausage in, without washing it, add olive oil, butter, and mushrooms. Sautee the mushrooms until they’re nice and golden brown and the juices have evaporated. Set aside.
  5. Place the two halves of the tomato cut side down on the hot pan. Let them char and grill until they have some colour on them. Finish with some salt and pepper to taste and set aside.
  6. Butter both sides of the bread then toast in in the pan until perfectly crispy and golden.
  7. Cook the vegan scrambled eggs according to package directions or prepare my Vegan Tofu Scramble.
  8. Pour a nice tall glass of orange juice
  9. Serve with marmalade, ketchup, and HP sauce.

There you have it. The Full English Breakfast, But VEGAN!!

  • Those eggs look incredible I had no idea they would look so good!

  • some one says:

I use spinach and pesto tofurky sausages and Sweet Earth Hickory & Sage Smoked Seitan Bacon. Also for black pudding I use gardenburger’s black bean flavored patties. I’m not sure all of this is vegan though, it is definately vegetarian though. I usually make my own beans, but this could be too time consuming if it isn’t a vegan “english breakfast” for a whole bunch of people. I also like to fry (or grill if you can) portabella mushrooms whole with garlic and fresh thyme in the gills (the underside of the mushroom). I also prefer the tofu scramble vs the fake eggs, sometimes I’ll do some tempeh fried and then mashed with ricotta (or staying vegan some vegan cheese melted in and mashed with the tempeh)

Typical of the Britsh upper classes so much meat and little thought for ones health. Greed is what counts,
