This episode is part of my HACKED series, where I take popular hacks on the internet and test them out in my kitchen. These videos show you how to make your life easier with great cooking hacks! One of the most popular hacks is making jackfruit taste like pulled pork, but I want to show you how to get that pork flavor the vegan way and without just dousing it with a bunch of BBQ sauce. Instead of stovetop cooking, I’ll be using the instant pot to get that really nice pulled pork with the stringy texture and smoked flavor in a pressure cooker.

Instructions
  1. Drain and rinse the jackfruit and place into the instant pot. Using a potato masher, mash the jackfruit to help it shred about halfway.
  2. Add remaining ingredients and stir to combine. Close the lid and the pressure valve, and pressure cook the jackfruit for 5 minutes.
  3. Allow the pressure to release naturally for 10 minutes.
  4. Open the vent, and then the lid and stir.
  5. Use the potato masher again to shred the jackfruit until it resembles pulled pork.
  6. Serve the jackfruit as is, or following the variations below, or store in the fridge until ready to serve.
To make BBQ Pulled jackfruit sandwiches: Add ½- ¾ cup vegan-friendly bbq sauce and serve on a toasted bun topped with slaw.
To make smokey tacos: Preheat the oven to 400°F and line a baking sheet with parchment or a baking mat. Spread the pulled jackfruit out onto the baking sheet and bake in the oven for 10 minutes. Top with cabbage slaw or mango salsa.

Instant Pot Jackfruit Tacos

Recipe for Instant Pot Jackfruit Pulled Pork

The first thing that you want to do with your jackfruit is taking it out of the can and rinse it. I used young jackfruit for this recipe, but you can use jackfruit with brine or water. Just avoid in syrup or else you’re going to have a sweet sticky mess. Now that you’ve rinsed your jackfruit, throw it into your instant pot. You can make this jackfruit pulled pork using a slow cooker, you’ll just have to adjust the cooking instructions a little bit.

Next, take a potato masher and mash the jackfruit in your instant pot. In my video, I half mashed the jackfruit, only because with the pressure of the instant pot, it’ll help break it down a little bit more and then we can mash it again after it’s cooked. Now, you’ll want to add one diced onion into the instant pot, as well as a quarter-cup of tomato sauce, the juice of one orange, and two cloves of garlic. Then you’ll want to add three tablespoons of tamari, two tablespoons nutritional yeast, one tablespoon apple cider vinegar, half of a teaspoon of liquid smoke, one tablespoon vegan Worcestershire sauce, one tablespoon of ground cumin, a teaspoon of paprika and a teaspoon of thyme.

Now that you have everything in the instant pot, give it a stir! Now, you’re going to pressure cook this for 4 minutes. First, it’s going to take about 15 mins for it to come to the right pressure, but then the actual pressure cooking is for 4 minutes. Then you’ll let the pressure escape naturally for 10 mins, and then it’s ready to go! After you’ve opened up the lid, take the potato masher again and break it more apart since the pressure cooking has made it nice and soft. You’ll notice it pulls apart very similar to pulled pork.

Now that you have your jackfruit tasting like pulled pork, you can enjoy this on a taco with some slaw salad or add a bit of BBQ sauce to make your traditional BBQ jackfruit pulled pork sandwich. And voila! Tasty instant pot Jackfruit Pulled “Pork” recipes to enjoy!

The overall dish was wonderful. The only thing was I felt there was too much liquid. It could have been me and the first time using this recipe. I will try again. 😋Thank. You!!

  • Rebekah Kiersz says:

What is the calorie count per serving? Thank you.

  • How many ounces of jackfruit?

  • Laura Sibley says:

This was so good! And easy! I served it with the coleslaw from the book!

  • Evelin Driscoll says:

Very disappointed with this recipe, the whole thing tastes like cumin. A tablespoon was way too much and now it doesn’t seem like I can fix it no matter how much bbq sauce I try to drown it in.

  • stephanie says:

Has anyone has success using frozen jackfruit?

  • Doris Hall says:

    Hi Candice!

Made this last night and it was a hit!! By far best vegan pulled pork sandwich we’ve eaten. Used a slow cooker instead and only took 2 hours on high. Love your recipes, love your videos 💕.

  • Kathy Burke says:

    HI Candice.

love your videos. I think there is a typo in the recipe vs. the video. the recipe says 1 tbls of liquid smoke. the video says 1/2 teas. I’m going to follow the video instructions. Making it right now…

    • EdgyVeg says:

      DEF a typo! Thank you!

    • Anyone have any advise on how not to get a good burn when using this recipe? I have tried it three times: as directed (with stirring), without stirring first, and with a non stick spray to see if that would help but still no luck. It is still delicious but I can’t even get it to the cook stage bc it always sets off the food burn notice. It is delicious even just warmed though and worth it! Any advice would help! Thank you in advance!

  • Hello Candice

I love your recipes . This is added to my “fav” list – as I tried it in Edinburgh and I could not tell it wasn’t pork.

Your “fakin bakin” is my 1st FAVOURITE because I love BLT’s .
I decrease the fussiness – I slather the rice paper rounds with sauce and then cut – much less work. I attended a workshop with friends ( Dr. Williams Cardiology in Bracebridge Ont) and I am trying to get friends to continue on their plant based journey – I want to make it SIMPLE and easy. Thank you !! for your creative cooking ideas that are so much FUN, FUNKY and healthy.

I keep telling “CARNIVORES” that it’s all about the flavours you add – but the “BRAINS???” of carnivores are built differently – so I have stopped trying to explain. I would use this recipe and just call it pulled pork and defy anyone to say it wasn’t.

    Question
I am “plant based with no added oil”.
I wonder if you could add a section to your Fabulous videos – about where to get things like – Jackfruit etc.
I have been following a plant based diet for the past 3 years and I hear all the time from people who won’t even start – because unless they are in dire circumstances with their health – just don’t want to know. It seems that it is just TOO HARD to make the switch.
For those who do want to make the effort – is it possible to share where you get some of your items???
I am Canadian and live just North of Toronto. Our local Independent store has a great choice of vegan/plant base products – but not jackfruit.

Thanks again Candice – I love your sense of FUN with FOOD that is good for us.

    • (Fellow Canadian here) I’ve recently discovered Superstore (if they’d have locations near you) has canned jackfruit, it is in their ethnic foods isle!
      Hope this helps 🙂

    • I know the Centro in Barrie carries it – that is where I buy mine. Perhaps other intenational grocers would carry as well.

  • Sherry Simpson says:

Can I use a regular crock pot? If so… how?

    Thanks
