Homemade Gatorade Recipe

Surprise! We are back to doing some awesome healthy recipes again! Yippieeeeee! This year I started working out very vigorously again to get myself in shape for my trip to Burning Man. To be totally honest, I am more of a yoga and Pilates gal, rather than a let’s-lift-weights-and-run-a-mile kinda gal. I am always where I want to be physically, but for this trip I like to look my best, so I hired a personal trainer to help me out.

After a good hard workout, replenishing your electrolytes is very important. Most folks turn to Gatorade or PowerAde, but I stay far away from that stuff. We have been collectively conditioned to think that these electrolyte drinks are the only thing that will quench our thirst, and hydrate our bodies—it’s amazing what marketing can do! I used to be one of those people, but after learning just how easy it is to get electrolytes into my body naturally, I realized that there was no need to buy that stuff at all!

Did you know that some conventional electrolyte beverages contain ingredients banned in over 100 countries?! Seriously, between the artificial colors, flavors, and sugars and synthetic materials I am wondering how anyone got away with marketing this chemical cocktail as a healthy choice!

Electrolyte… what’s what?

Our bodies require a certain balance of water and electrolytes to survive. Too much or too little of either and your body’s chemistry starts to get a bit wonky. This is why hydrating properly when exercising, is so important. Drinking too much water can cause you to over water your system and dilute your electrolytes. Many athletes, and those of us with vigorous workouts, neglect consistent electrolyte replenishment, which can, in turn will cause our muscles to start cramping.

We need to be mindful of this, but we do not need the orange colour, and synthetic flavor of Gatorade. Our body simply needs good wholesome electrolytes, and you can get everything you need from a large glass of coconut water! Coconut water is the perfect recovery drink, you can drink it on it’s own– the way it comes from nature, or you can turn it into your very own Gatorade, like it do!

My Favourite Natural Ingredients

Maple Syrup or Coconut sugar: I am talking about the real stuff here. Maple syrup (a Canadian treat) is filled with natural enzymes and minerals. These easily digestible sugars are great to keep energy high during exercise.

Pink Himalayan Rock Salt : This salt is the only salt you should ever use. It is rich in the same 84 trace minerals that our bodies need to live, like sodium, magnesium, potassium, and calcium.

Coconut Water: My favourite recovery and hangover elixir, due to being the best source of electrolytes and extremely high potassium content. We drink sos much of this stuff in our home.

Watermelon: Watermelons have become synonymous with summer and picnics. Made up of 92% water and full of important electrolytes and choline; eating/drinking watermelon can aid our bodies in sleep, muscle movement, learning and memory. Watermelon juice has also been shown to reduce muscle soreness and improve recovery time following exercise in athletes.

Nutri Maqui: This gluten-free dietary supplement formulated by Nutri Lifescience supports strong immunity and inflammatory response, while promoting adequate blood glucose levels and helping to protect against cardiovascular risks. This wholesome juice blend contains maqui berry, as well as acai, pomegranate, elderberry, blackberry and raspberry to maximize antioxidant defenses against cell oxidation. Therefore, consuming Nutri Maqui on a daily basis promotes healthy aging, long-term vitality and overall longevity.

But what exactly is maqui?

Maqui berry is a purple berry that grows abundantly in the Patagonia region in South America. Maqui Berry is revered as a symbol of health and strength.

Of all the berries, maqui is believed to have the highest antioxidant compared to any known superfruits. Packed with health-promoting antioxidants that help stop harmful free-radicals from damaging cells, and keeps you healthy.

This homemade recovery drink is the perfect way to consume my daily dose of Nutri Maqui. A supplement I started taking as a companion to my other daily supplements.
