“So, like, how do you get your protein?” We have all heard this annoying phrase, maybe one too many times in our vegan lives. Well here is another answer you can give along with beans, lentils and seitan!
Spirulina is a fresh water algae; a form of bacteria that has more protein than steak. But not only is it high in protein, it is also high in iron, and B12, and contains all 8 essential amino acids. Making it the perfect vegan super food! It has all the things that we as vegans find hard to get in other foods. Sure iron can be found in plant-based sources like lima beans, Swiss chard, quinoa, tofu, tempeh, and spinach; but you have to eat a wide range of vegetables to get the necessary amounts. So just take a capsule of Spirulina instead!
But spirulina is not just for vegans, most people are low in vitamin B12, so spirulina is a great addition to your diet, even if you do eat meat or live with someone who eats meat. And it’s super easy to incorporate into your diet. You can buy it in liquid, powder or pill form, making it easy to add to smoothies, juices, or taking it in the morning with water!
